October 27, 1984 Claire is 13 and Henry is 43. She awakes in the middle of the night to someone screaming her name. The voice sounds like Henry so she runs out of the bed and into the meadow. She finds Henry, but he is not alone. He is with her dad and her brother. She is so confused, she tries to talk to Henry but he shakes his head and tells her to keep it a secret. Her dad gets impatient and sends her back to bed telling her it was just a dream. As she is walking back inside she looks back; but Henry is gone. She gets into her bed, her expression is quizzical, she cannot remember what just happened.
June 5, 1987 Claire finds out that her mom is going to kill herself. Henry had to tell her, he couldn't keep it from her any longer. Even though he warned her that knowing things about the future really mess up lives he didn't care. If I was in Claire's position I don't know if i would want to know or not. I mean my mom dying would be a big deal but knowing it was going to happen ahead of time might even be worse than it happening suddenly.
The next time Henry and Claire meet it is the day Claire got her licence. She was 16 and Henry was 32, she was only half his age this time. She was so excited about getting her license because she was going to drive her dad's car to a big party that her friend was having. Henry showed up right before she was leaving and she invited him to go with. He accepted but he had to stay in the car the whole time because her friends weren't allowed to know that she was "dating" a 32 year old man. They end up going to this party but Henry stayed in the car. Claire said she was only going to be a little while, but an hour later and she was still inside at the party. Henry was about to get out of the car to go take a leak when Claire's friend Helen started walking towards him. She began interrogating him, asking him if he was her boyfriend and all kinds of shanagins. He denied everything, he said he was sent by Claire's parents to keep an eye on her and to drive her home if she was intoxicated. Then suddenly Claire was in the car and she looked extremely pissed off. She drove crazily with out her lights on while they were on a high way. She new she had a future so she wasn't afraid of dying because she knew she wouldn't. Henry was scared shittless so he was scratching his arms with his fingernails the whole time. Before he realized it he was covered in blood, and so was Claire.
September 27, 1987 Claire is 16 and Henry is 32. Henry meets Claire in the same meadow that they have been meeting in for at least 10 years. Today is different though. Claire doesn't look like the happy bubbly person she always looks like; she looks pissed off, and embarrassed. Henry asks whats wrong and it takes a while for her to respond but she finally tells him. She went on a date with a football player because everyone was teasing her for not dating; they thought she was a lesbian. The date was going fine until he asked is she wanted to go to a park where they could hook up. She didn't want to, she asked him to just take her home. That set him off. He wanted to get something out of that date and he was going to make sure it happened. He ended up taking her to a cottage. He told her she wasn't good enough for him and he started hitting her. She had bruises all down her back and stomach. Also, she had a cigarette burn on her breast, that scar never went away. Hearing all of this really made Henry mad. He wanted to beat the living shit out of this guy right away. Claire drove him to this guys house and they basically held him at gun point and kidnapped him. The gun of course didn't have any bullets in it but it definitely made him obey. They took him to the woods across his house and duct taped him to a tree. They took off all his clothes and kicked him once or twice. Then Claire called every girl in her phone to come look at him. She left before anyone got there and told the guy to never mess with her again or he would be in for it big time. She really got herself some sweet revenge.
This part of the book was really exciting. I couldn't put the book down; I just had to know what came next. I'm a little shocked still about the whole kidnap at gun point thing but I guess Claire and Henry weren't afraid of getting in trouble with the law. Claire is a really risky girl, she likes adventures and doesn't care about the consequences. Henry is more laid back, but when Claire needs him he is there to help her with what ever she needs, i guess you could say he is "whipped."
